It has already been reported that the large seven-seat SUV may come to Russia and while speaking with Autocar, the company’s head of full-size product lines Elmar-Marius Licharz opened up the possibility of it being exported elsewhere.
“We are thinking about Europe. For most regions, the Touareg is the right car, but there are certainly markets like Russia and the Middle East where we see the Atlas could be popular.
“The Atlas is quite big, so we need to evaluate the likely demand - it might even be too big to fit in many European garages. But clearly there are some markets in Europe where it would make sense, and there is spare capacity at the Chattanooga plant where we are building it if we choose to do this,” Licharz confirmed.
If a decision is made to bring the Atlas across the Atlantic it would have to be made available with a diesel, potentially the brand’s 2.0-liter TDI with 188 hp. Volkswagen has yet to commit to offering the model with this engine but says “it is possible.”
