In a statement, the electric automaker says that LG Chem will become a key supplier of battery cells for its future models, starting with its first production vehicle, the Air. Lucid intends on using cylindrical cells produced by LG Chem and developed in collaboration with the carmaker.
The announcement of this partnership comes just a couple of weeks after Lucid announced a similar battery supply deal with Samsung SDI. The company says that by having two deals, it will have the flexibility to choose which battery cells are the best for each application. For example, Lucid asserts that that these battery deals could lead to battery sales to other companies or that different batteries will be used in separate variants of the Air.
According to Lucid’s director of battery technology, Albert Liu, “Lucid Motors is grateful for the tremendous level of support from the LG Chem team. LG Chem’s lithium-ion cells are among the best on the market, and we are pleased to have them as one of the suppliers of this critical component. I look forward to continued collaboration with LG Chem on the many exciting projects we have in our product pipeline.”
Interestingly, LG Chem also has a battery supply deal with Faraday Future.
