In fact, poor sales have reportedly made the Germans pull the plug on it, as Autocar reports, citing undisclosed sources with knowledge on the matter. The decision, however, starts making more sense when remembering that the CC is actually based on the previous generation Passat, and has been around since 2007, with a mid-cycle facelift applied five years ago.
As far as its replacement goes, it will be underpinned by the same architecture as the latest Passat, the MQB, which is being used on a wide range of vehicles made by the VW Group. This will open up the possibility of a wide petrol and diesel engine lineup, but it remains to be seen whether electrified powertrains will be introduced.
Designers have apparently looked at the Sport Coupe Concept GTE for inspiration when penning the new CC, which will adopt new lighting units on both ends, and maintain its sloping roofline. Inside, expect a four- and five-seat layout, depending on the selected version, along with the latest infotainment system and technologies.
An exact reveal date is still far from being announced, but we could be looking into a 2017 presentation.
