Opel Teases 2017 Insignia Grand Sport; Gets New IntelliLux Headlights With 32 LEDs

GM's European brand, Opel / Vauxhall, is preparing to renew its assault on the family sedan class with a new generation of the Insignia that adds the 'Grand Sport' moniker to its name, and which will eventually arrive on North America shores as the Buick Regal's replacement.

We're still several months away from the Insignia Grand Sport's official presentation at next year's Geneva Motor Show, but Opel is slowly opening up, releasing bits and pieces of information. Today, we learned that it will launch the brand's next-generation of IntelliLux LED lighting units, while also getting a teaser shot of the car.

Building upon the current headlamps that debuted on the Astra with 16 LED segments, the Insignia Grand Sport doubles up featuring 32 LED segments, promising  to turn "night into day without dazzling other road users".

The light patterns can be "precisely adapted", as Opel explains, illuminating the asphalt for up to 400 meters (1,312 feet) at full high-beam and switching themselves automatically to distribute the light beam to every traffic situation, from town driving to country roads, and from the motorway to taking tight turns.

"From the Astra we know how much customers appreciate the benefits of IntelliLux LED matrix headlights. Now we are bringing the even more advanced second generation of this innovative technology onto the market in the all-new Insignia, with additional new functions that further improve visibility at night", said Engineering Group Manager Exterior Lighting, Ingolf Schneider.

Besides being offered as Buick Regal, the Insignia will also be marketed in Australia as the new Holden Commodore.
