Speaking with Top Gear at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Matthias Luhrs confirmed the news but was eager to point out that no final decision has been given.
“We are looking at all sorts of options. A [Maybach] SUV is still one of them…no decision has been made yet,” he said.
If the brand down bite the bullet and finally bring a Maybach SUV to fruition, it would be pitted against a range of rivals in the emerging market, including the Bentley Bentayga, Rolls-Royce Cullinan and even the Lamborghini Urus.
There’s a potential that Mercedes is waiting for Rolls-Royce to release its SUV in order to gauge just how prosperous this market could prove.
If the car is given the go-ahead, it will inevitably be based around the Mercedes-Benz GLS which in standard form, combines the luxury of the S-Class with the versatility and off-road prowess of an SUV.
