The Italian car maker has confirmed to Autocar that the Alfieri is set to become the first pure electric model in the Italian automaker’s history.
Despite the original 2014 concept being powered by a V8, the company decided to use a V6 instead due to the stricter emissions and fuel economy standards. The fact that the Alfieri will be available with both petrol and all-electric powertrains means that the new two-door coupe will most likely be the first model of the brand to use a new platform that can accommodate such setups.
Maserati is also planning to replace the ageing GranTurismo and GranCabrio in 2018-2019, with their successors set to be based on the same platform with the current Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante. Both models will keep their 2+2 layouts, but will be more compact than the ones on the market today. This will help in reducing emissions and improving fuel economy and the adoption of a twin-turbo V6 instead of the naturally aspirated V8 aims to further drive these numbers down.
