According to an Electrek report, early this week the automaker dropped the Model X 60D from its design studio, bumping up the model's base price to $85,000.
Despite what the name of the Model X 60D suggests, it never actually came with a 60 kWh battery pack. Instead, it was installed with the firm's 75 kWh battery but was software-limited to 60 kWh, offering customers a semi-affordable entrance into the soon-to-be-swollen electric SUV market.
Tesla has yet to announce why it has scrapped the 60D, but it just might have done so to help increase profit margins, bringing in more cash that can be funneled into the development of the $35,000 Model 3. Or perhaps it wasn't that popular with its customers. Whatever the reason, at the end of the day what matters is that acquiring a Model X just became significantly more expensive.
