If you didn’t pay a whole of attention to the first and last seconds of the video before reading this, you’d be forgiven to think that Mercedes-Benz had the same division that styled the AMG GT dream up a pickup truck.
But piece together the profile shots, and you’ll get a slightly different picture, one we strongly suspected not only after Merc’s announced its intent to join forces with Nissan and develop their own model based off the European market NP300 Navara, but also when the first prototypes hit the road.
Yes, the as of yet unnamed Mercedes truck, which could be called the ‘GLT’ or ‘X-Class, seems to have an aggressive fascia reminiscent of the brand’s sporty AMG models, a sexy set of wheels and what looks to be a rear diffuser, but look at the profile that we stitched from the screenshots and you’ll no doubt see the NP300 Navara staring at you.
Mercedes has promised to give their iteration of the Navara a re-skinned premium interior akin to their passenger car line up, as well its own suspension settings, while it could also get one or more dedicated powertrains aside from the ones offered by Nissan.
The pick-up truck will be built at Spanish and Argentinian factories owned by Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and will be sold from next year in European, Australian, South African and Latin American markets. There are no current plans to offer the model in North America’s ultra-competitive truck market.
