The problem comes down to the diodes in the alternator, which may wear out prematurely – specifically after frequent load cycling near their maximum amperage in hot temperatures. That combination of circumstances – said to be “consistent with fleet-vehicle usage” – could cause the alternators to short-circuit, leaving the engine to stall or even sparking a fire.
The manufacturer started looking into the issue after an injury report, and as a result is recalling 74,833 vehicles including 2007-13 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, as well 3500, 4500, and 5500 chassis cabs, and 2011-14 Dodge Charger Pursuit vehicles. Another 10,077 such vehicles are being recalled in Canada, 1,088 in Mexico, and just 134 outside of North America.
