Speculations ranged from alleged joint ventures with McLaren and Magna Steyr, to hiring ex Tesla and Aston Martin engineers, but the latest intel suggests that the Apple car might not even happen!
According to Bloomberg, the Cupertino-based firm has “scaled back” its automotive goals. In fact, unnamed sources claim that hundreds of Apple employees from Project Titan (as the car was named internally) have been reassigned, dismissed, or left of their own will in recent months.
The report goes on saying that Apple executives have given the car team a deadline by the end of 2017 to decide on an outcome, while the project has been re-focused on creating autonomous driving tech that would help Apple either design its own vehicle in the future, or partner with other car makers and share their expertise.
This change comes after months of strategy disagreements and other challenges faced by the company. Either way, by the looks of it, Apple’s mission to revolutionize (and put a dent) in the automotive industry by 2030 is running out of time.
