Volkswagen dealers are now accepting orders for the Passat GTE plug-in hybrid.
Offered in both saloon and estate guises, its powertrain comprises a 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol engine, an electric motor and a special triple-clutch six-speed transmission. Total system output is rated at 215 bhp (160 kW / 218 PS) with 400 Nm (295 lb/ft) of peak torque.
The saloon version can accelerate from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a spirited 7.4 seconds, before going on to a top speed of 140 mph (225 km/h). 166.0 mpg (1.7 l/100km) and CO2 emissions of 39 g/km on the combined cycle indicate decent efficiency.
An eight-module, ninety-six-cell, lithium-ion 360 V battery pack is housed beneath the rear seat. Thanks to a 9.9 kWh capacity, pure-electric range is up to 31 miles (50 kilometres). Recharging via a standard UK socket takes about four hours and fifteen minutes, but that time falls to two hours and thirty minutes when using a dedicated 3.6 kW wallbox.
18” alloy wheels, a restyled front bumper and a decorative blue line across the grille identify the Passat GTE. Standard equipment includes Alcantara and leather upholstery, satellite navigation, LED headlights and the Car-Net e-Remote app which allows various vehicle functions to be controlled from a smartphone.
The better-equipped GTE Advance trim grade additionally comes with the Area View 360° camera device, Active Info Display, upgraded voice-activated navigation, a panoramic sunroof and full Nappa leather.
Although prices are noticeably higher than those of non-hybrid Passat variants, the premiums are currently reduced by the government's £2,500 Plug-in Car Grant.
