Unlike its predecessor, the second-generation Crafter won't share a bodyshell with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. This all-new model, which takes many styling cues from the smaller Transporter, is going to be manufactured at a specially-constructed plant in Poland.
In van form, customers will have a choice of three vehicle lengths and heights. Although final specifications have yet to be announced, Volkswagen is keen to emphasise the range of available driver-assistance and safety items. These include LED headlights, rear-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, side-wind compensation, trailer stabilisation and trailer manoeuvring assistance.
All versions are powered by an EU6-compatible 2.0 litre turbocharged diesel engine that's being offered in four states of tune: 100 bhp (75 kW / 102 PS), 120 bhp (90 kW / 122 PS), 138 bhp (103 kW / 140 PS) and – in biturbo guise – 174 bhp (130 kW / 177 PS).
Depending on the output selected, the Crafter can be equipped with either a manual or an automatic transmission. Furthermore, front-, rear- and 4Motion all-wheel drive options add to the variety.
UK deliveries are expected to begin early next year.
