Top 10: Things that identify the 2016 Giulietta

Alfa Romeo refers to its 2016 Giulietta as 'new', which seems like a rather generous description for what is really a fairly basic late-life refresh.

Dedicated fans of the handsome C-segment hatchback will probably be able to pick out most of the amendments unaided. For everybody else, here's a brief spotter's guide:

    1. A more purposeful-looking front grille

Clearly the most obvious alteration. A black honeycomb motif is complemented by either burnished or faux-carbon headlight surrounds, but sadly the previous model's elegant horizontal chrome grille bars are gone.

    2. Revised alloy wheel designs

A quick and easy tactic to help change a car's appearance. Diameters increase from 16” to 17” to 18” as the range ladder is climbed.

    3. Two additional paint colours

They're Lipari Grey and Alfa White, so nothing too exciting.

    4. Updated interiors

Depending on the variant chosen, the 2016 Giulietta comes with fabric, fabric and Alcantara, or full leather upholstery. The dashboard and door cards have benefited from a modest revamp, too.

    5. An enhanced Uconnect infotainment system

Every 2016 Giulietta comes with a 5” Uconnect screen with Live smartphone connectivity, as well as a DAB radio and Bluetooth. Posher versions also boast a 6.5” display plus voice-operated satellite navigation.

    6. Another powertrain combination

For the first time, the 118 bhp (88 kW / 120 PS) 1.6 litre JTDM-2 turbo diesel engine can be ordered with a six-speed TCT dual-clutch transmission. This pairing delivers 74.3 mpg (3.8 l/100km) and 99 g/km of CO2 emissions on the combined cycle, while the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint takes 10.2 seconds.

    7. An overhauled trim grade structure

In the UK – where sales of the 2016 Giulietta have just begun – buyers can opt for entry-level, Tecnica, Super, Speciale or sporty Veloce guises. Thanks to a 236 bhp (176 kW / 240 PS) 1,742 cc turbocharged petrol motor, the last of those can accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.0 seconds before reaching 152 mph (245 km/h).

    8. No more 'fleet special' Business Edition

That's because the Business Edition has been replaced by the aforementioned Tecnica which, like its predecessor, is only available to corporate customers. An extensive standard specification includes automatic lights and wipers, front and rear parking sensors, rear privacy glass, side skirts, front seat electric lumber support, the larger 6.5” Uconnect screen and satellite navigation.

    10. Some fresh badges

Mentioning the Giulietta's emblems is maybe a sign of desperation, but it's also an indication that nothing else of any significance has changed for 2016.
