Another year of strong demand saw 124,945 new car registrations in Ireland during 2015. That figure, published by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, represents an increase of almost 30% versus 2014’s total.
With the second plate-change month of July now well established, the spread of sales throughout the year was pretty much unchanged.
Likewise, the mix of fuel types remained broadly similar, although diesel’s market share slipped from 73.5% to 71.2%. The ‘alternative’ category (which includes pure electric and hybrid vehicles) showed the largest percentage increase, but volumes are still very modest.
The top ten manufacturers’ list ended up looking virtually identical to 2014’s, too.
However, two brands recorded particularly notable performances. Firstly, Hyundai grew its market share by 0.7% to 9.2% thanks to additional i10, i20 and ix35 deliveries. Secondly, the arrival of the Pulsar was primarily responsible for Nissan’s rise from 7.3% to 9.0%.
Once again the Golf topped the individual models’ league table, while the Focus took over second position from the Qashqai.
In fact, it was a successful year for Volkswagen Group products, as the Škoda Octavia and Volkswagen Passat moved up two and five places respectively. Of course, any impact of the diesel emissions scandal (which was first reported in September) has yet to be seen, because the fourth quarter accounted for just 3.1% of 2015’s total registrations.
