Samsung Teams Up With BMW To Develop Intelligent Assistants To Self-Driving Cars

Samsung Electronics is putting its newly-assembled division on self-driving car technology immediately to work. The South Korean OEM is teaming up with BMW and Panasonic to develop an "intelligent assistant" for the cars of the future.

Forbes reported that the three major industry movers are also recruiting Nuance, a firm specializing in speech recognition, to create a system in which a user can communicate with the automobile. Nuance will make the system better understand varying accents from all over the world.

The intelligent assistant will essentially function like Cortana or Siri for mobile phones. The car system will be able to recognize the driver's voice and follow verbal commands essential to the autonomous vehicle industry. Similar features are already available to luxury car owners, but the collaboration is likely to improve existing technology.

UberGizmo reported that this is not the first time Samsung and BMW are working together. The Southe Korean OEM has been a reliable supplier of batteries to the German automobile manufacturer's line of electric cars in the past.

So far, Samsung has yet to venture into experimenting with a self-driving car of its own. But the company has invested efforts into developing technologies which will likely be in demand in a few years or so as the self-driving car market continues to flourish. Earlier this year, the makers of the Galaxy Note 5 announced that it is establishing a division to focus on the creation and development of car components to supply to manufacturers.

Business Insider predicted that about 10 million autonomous cars will be driving down the highways in just five years from now. This is not surprising considering that Google, Tesla, Nissan, BMW, and even Uber are working to make what is deemed to be the car of the future a reality as soon as possible.
