These are the seven models that could become the 2016 European Car of the Year:
The announcement follows a first round of voting, in which 58 jurors participated.
Unsurprisingly, more exotic candidates such as the Ferrari 488 GTB, McLaren 570S and Mercedes-AMG GT failed to progress any further.
However, it is remarkable that none of the eligible compact crossovers or SUVs – the BMW X1, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Mazda CX-3, Renault Kadjar, SsangYong Tivoli and Suzuki Vitara – made it through to the final stage. Perhaps support was spread too thinly among them?
As the European Car of the Year title is usually awarded to a sensible 'family' vehicle, the Škoda Superb and Vauxhall / Opel Astra should be favourites to win.
The result is due to be revealed on the 29th of February, following a second ballot. As part of that process, each jury member will have a total of 25 points to allocate to at least five nominees.
