Volvo gets set to join the WTCC in 2016

With Citroën currently dominating the FIA World Touring Car Championship, the series needs another manufacturer to challenge the French brand. Conveniently, Volvo has just announced plans for a two-car team that will take to the grid next season.

The multi-year campaign is going to be run by Volvo's Polestar Performance subsidiary, in partnership with independent motorsport outfit Cyan Racing.

At the moment, all cars competing in the WTCC are compact segment models. So, following a similar logic, the V40 hatchback would be the obvious choice for Volvo. However, the larger S60 saloon has been selected instead.

Built according to the latest TC1 regulations, the S60 features a Volvo-developed 1.6 litre turbocharged engine which produces around 400 horsepower (about 295 kW).

Christian Dahl, CEO of Cyan Racing, commented: “We have got respect for the task ahead of us that we take on with absolute commitment. This is a long-term effort and we have got an extensive testing programme during the winter that will continue alongside our first WTCC season in 2016 that is all about learning.”

A driver line-up has yet to be confirmed.
