Seat's high-performance Leon Cupra is getting an improved engine. It's still a turbocharged 2.0 litre unit, but output is up by 10 bhp (7 kW / 10 PS) to 286 bhp (213 kW / 290 PS).
On the face of it, that modest increase hasn't had much effect, because the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint time is unchanged at 5.8 seconds. However peak torque – which remains at 350 Nm (258 lb/ft) – is now available across a broader rev range, so mid-range urge should be better. As before, top speed is electronically-limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).
290 horsepower is a lot for a front-wheel drive chassis to cope with, so the Leon needs various technologies to help keep things in check. Consequently a front differential lock, Dynamic Chassis Control and progressive steering are all fitted.
Standard equipment includes LED headlights, touchscreen-controlled satellite navigation and Alcantara-covered sports seats. The Sub8 Performance Pack (comprising Brembo brake calipers, larger brake discs and unique wheels) continues to be on the options list.
Like its predecessor, the Leon Cupra 290 is going to be offered in five-door hatchback, SC three-door and ST estate guises.
UK prices have yet to be announced.
