When the Gripz was first partially revealed in some teaser shots, rumours suggested it could be offering a preview of the second-generation Juke. Now, following the concept's appearance at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, that theory is looking much less credible.
Indeed, Nissan says the Gripz “blends the ability and practicality of a compact crossover with the excitement and performance of a sports car”. In other words, the brand could be moving into a new niche with a vehicle that ends up wearing a 'Z' badge.
From bumper to bumper the Gripz measures 4,100 mm (13’ 5”), making it about the same length as the current Juke. However, it's slightly lower and the distinctive rally-raid proportions are quite different. Key styling cues include the large bonnet, low-profile glasshouse, sloping roof line and huge 22” wheels.
Certain features probably wouldn't survive to production. Among them are the carbon fibre body architecture, a lack of B-pillars and the complex door-opening arrangements.
More likely to withstand a possible metamorphosis to showroom model is the range-extender powertrain, which comprises a petrol engine generator, a battery pack and the Leaf's electric motor.
