Alfa Romeo showed off its newest creation at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this week. The new Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is a technological tour de force that showcases what the legendary car maker is all about. The car becoming an extension of the driver's body and soul is what Alfa Romeo does best, and the new Giulia Quadrifoglio takes the fusion of man and machine to the next level with its stunning performance capabilities.
You must watch the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio full press conference at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show!
The Giulia was developed by a team of elite engineers hand picked from all over FCA and overseen by two senior heads from Ferrari. And it shows. The twin-turbo V6 engine is derived from Ferrari's twin-turbo V8, but heavily re-engineered for the Giulia and puts out 510 HP and 442 lbs ft of torque. The results are 0-62 mph blasts in 3.9 seconds. However, the Giulia is more than just brutal acceleration. Like all great Alfa Romeos it is about balanced performance, so along with the massive power comes equally impressive handling and stopping.
Advanced engineering brings about patented suspension systems front and rear, torque vectoring rear differential for stability and the most direct steering on the market. The robust chassis boasts ample use of ultralight materials, such as carbon fiber, composite materials, aluminum, and magnesium, allowing a dry weight of just 3373 lbs.
Carbon fiber is used for the roof and hood as well as the driveshaft and seat frames. Factoring in the massive horsepower, the Giulia Quadrifoglio achieves a power to weight ratio of just 6.58 lbs per HP, the best in its segment. The gorgeous shell that wraps the body is extremely aerodynamic, the base Giulia records a drag coefficient of just .25 Cd - the best of its competitors
Particular care has been taken to assure high-speed stability and an automatically adjustable carbon fiber front air splitter contributes to the car's negative downforce measurement of 220 lbs at 186 mph. This is needed because the Giulia Quadrifoglio has a top speed of 191 mph.
Reigning in all this speed is a brake system that is worthy of the Giulia's supercar power and handling. For the first time in production, an Integrated Brake System is used which combines stability control and a traditional brake servo for instantaneous brake response, and record-breaking stopping distances without the typical ABS pedal vibration. When teamed with carbon ceramic brake discs, the Giulia QV can stop from 100 km/h to 0 in less than 32 meters (105 feet).
The electronic stability control is tuned to improve the driving experience and be a performance enhancer and not a fault corrector. The Torque Vectoring rear differential uses a double-clutch to control the torque delivery to each wheel independently, improving traction in low grip conditions without the utilization of the brake system or cutting engine power.
The proof that this all works is the announcement that the Giulia Quadrifoglio has set a world record lap time on Germany's Nurburgring race track. The Giulia was the fastest sedan ever with a time of 7 minutes 39 seconds.
Prices in Italy for the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio will start at 79,000 Euros (72,000 in Germany) with a special lightweight launch edition fitting carbon ceramic brake discs, ultra-light carbon fiber sport seats and many more exclusive premium features for 95,000 Euros (90,000 in Germany). Expect to see the Alfa Giulia in US Alfa Romeo showrooms sometime next year.
