The iconic VW van has ended production, but we're still clinging on to the memories
Besides making good cars, Volkswagen is also very good at tugging on our heart-strings. From its cheeky viral commercials to its excellent retro print campaigns, the automaker defies the stereotype that Germans don’t understand humour or emotion.The latest example of this genius is Volkswagen’s farewell to its iconic Microbus. To the dismay of its many fans, Volkswagen ended the van’s 56-year-long production last year and the final models rolled off the Brazilian assembly line in December 2013. After a long and colourful life, the van was ultimately unable to meet new safety standards, and VW discontinued it.
Not to let the van go easily, Volkswagen gives the icon a voice (strangely a British voice and not a German one) and grants the van’s last wishes. VW takes you back in time to some of the van’s most defining moments in history and profiles some of the vibrant people who have driven them.
