Forty models have been provisionally named as candidates for the 2016 European Car of the Year award.
The final list is due to be published at the beginning of December, after which a first jury vote will choose seven nominees.
Then, a second ballot is going to decide the winner. Organisers intend to announce the result on the 29th of February, just ahead of the Geneva Motor Show.
The European Car of the Year title usually goes to a worthy (but not necessarily very exciting) contender from a mainstream manufacturer. The last three victors were the Volkswagen Passat, Peugeot 308 and Volkswagen Golf, for example.
On that basis, the likes of the Renault Kadjar, Škoda Superb and Vauxhall / Opel Astra would have to be favourites this time.
