Mitsubishi has announced that a specially-prepared Outlander PHEV is going to compete in October’s Baja de Portalegre 500.
The event, which is the tenth and final round of the 2015 FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup, is run over 500 kilometres (310 miles) of mainly gravel-covered roads in eastern Portugal.
Naturally the all-wheel drive Outlander plug-in hybrid will be extensively modified.
Based on the latest post-facelift model, the alterations are due to include tougher longer-travel suspension, larger tyres and the fitment of various mandatory safety items. A higher-capacity battery pack plus a returned engine should help deliver some extra performance, too.
Hiroshi Masuoka - who won the Dakar Rally in 2002 and 2003 behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Pajero - has already been named as the Outlander’s driver and team leader.
