The Mini Clubman just got a lot bigger

Mini has unveiled the all-new 2016 Clubman, which will become part of a five-strong (and more premium) model range.

There are two obvious major differences compared to the previous version. First, an increase in length from 3,961 mm (12’ 11”) to 4,253 mm (13’ 11”) clearly indicates that this is a much larger car with enough room inside for five people.

Indeed, the latest Clubman isn’t merely a Mini 5-door Hatch with some extra bodywork at the rear. Versus the latter, its wheelbase and width have been extended by 100 mm (4”) and 73 mm (3”) respectively.

The second change concerns the doors. Gone is the single rear-hinged ‘Clubdoor’ that helped to provide access to the back seats (albeit from one side only). Now there are four conventional side doors - a very practical but less distinctive arrangement.

Twin rear tailgate doors remain, although they’ve gained some rather hideous taillight clusters plus a kitsch chrome ‘Clubman’ inscription. Behind them lies up to 1,250 litres of luggage space.

The Clubman’s launch sees the introduction of a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 147 bhp (110 kW / 150 PS). An optional eight-speed automatic transmission is going to be available for the first time in a Mini, too.
