Yamaha NMAX scooter unveiled

Yamaha’s already extensive 125 cc scooter range is gaining another member. The new NMAX, which will be aimed primarily at younger riders, has been described as an entry-level urban commuter.

Despite that role, the NMAX features disc brakes front and rear with a standard anti-lock system, twin LED headlights, LCD instruments and 13” alloy wheels.

The engine specification isn’t exactly basic, either. Power comes from a single-cylinder, four-stroke, liquid-cooled unit that boasts fuel injection plus variable valve actuation.

Its output of 12.0 bhp (9.0 kW / 12.2 PS) is delivered via a V-belt automatic transmission. Wet weight meanwhile is just 127 kg (279 lbs), so performance should be nippy enough.

Many prospective buyers are going to be equally concerned about economy. They probably won’t be disappointed though, because the NMAX manages to achieve an impressive 129.0 mpg (2.2 l/100km / 45.7 km/l) according to the World Motorcycle Test Cycle.

Yamaha has yet to announce a price.
