Volkswagen gives its Caddy van a facelift

Eleven years after the current model was launched, Volkswagen’s Caddy is getting a comprehensive overhaul. Indeed, the new version is being described as ‘fourth-generation’ to reflect how extensive the changes are.

The nose and tailgate have been redesigned, plus the swage lines that run from the headlights into the front doors now feature sharper creases. Inside, the dashboard has been refreshed too.

Perhaps more significant is the introduction of numerous safety devices. Among these are the Multi-Collision Brake System and City Emergency Braking. The former automatically applies the brakes after an impact, while the latter does the same if the driver fails to spot an obstacle at speeds of less than 19 mph (30 km/h).

Also available for the first time are a reversing camera, Park Assist automated parallel parking, radar-controlled Adaptive Cruise Control and, to detect drowsiness, Driver Alert.

Just as important for operators will be the revised engine line-up. It’s headed by a new EU6-compliant, four-cylinder, 2.0 litre diesel unit that comes in 73 bhp (55 kW / 75 PS), 100 bhp (75 kW / 102 PS) and 147 bhp (110 kW / 150 PS) guises.

Alternatively, an EU5 2.0 litre diesel is being offered which produces 73 bhp (55 kW / 75 PS), 100 bhp (75 kW / 102 PS) or 138 bhp (103 kW / 140 PS).

UK deliveries are expected to begin sometime towards the end of this year. Prices and exact market specifications haven’t been confirmed yet.
