Peugeot 208 GTi 30th special edition unveiled

This year marks three decades since the 205 GTi first appeared. So, to celebrate that anniversary, Peugeot has created the 208 GTi 30th special edition.

While the most obvious change is a somewhat garish red and black livery, the 208 GTi 30th also comes with some notable technical upgrades courtesy of Peugeot Sport.

Compared to the regular 208 GTi, power from the 1.6 litre petrol engine has been increased from 197 bhp (147 kW / 200 PS) to 205 bhp (153 kW / 208 PS). Torque meanwhile is up by 25 Nm (18 lb/ft) to 300 Nm (221 lb/ft) and the six-speed manual gearbox has altered ratios.

As a result, 0.3 seconds has been shaved off the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time, meaning the 208 GTi 30th completes the benchmark sprint in just 6.5 seconds. Perhaps importantly for bragging rights purposes, that makes it quicker than a Renault Clio Renaultsport 200.

To make the most of the extra performance a Torsen limited-slip differential has been added to the specification. Furthermore, recalibrated electronic stability and traction control systems should be less intrusive, plus the steering, spring and damper rates are all unique.

Other chassis tweaks include a lower ride height, widened tracks and the fitment of larger 18” wheels that have a matt black finish and are shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres.

Sales of the 208 GTi 30th are scheduled to begin in November, following a public debut at the Paris Motor Show. Pearl White and Ruby Red are the paintwork alternatives for those who don’t fancy a two-tone colour scheme.
