2015 BMW M4 Convertible revealed

Last December saw the new M3 Saloon and M4 Coupé unveiled. Now, as anticipated, they’ve been joined by the first-ever M4 Convertible.

All three models share the same 3.0 litre, straight-six, twin-turbo engine that produces 425 bhp (317 kW / 431 PS) with 550 Nm (405 lb/ft) of peak torque. Similarly, M4 Convertible buyers will get to choose from either a six-speed manual gearbox or the optional seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) which features Launch Control.

The use of aluminium for the front wings, bonnet and various chassis components means the M4 Convertible is around 60 kg (132 lbs) lighter than the old M3 cabriolet. Nevertheless, the folding metal roof mechanism and additional body strengthening has resulted in a kerb weight of 1,750 kg (3,858 lbs), an increase of 47 kg (103 lbs) compared to the M4 Coupé.

That extra mass has had a slight effect on performance, however the benchmark figures suggest it won’t be especially noticeable. The M4 Convertible’s 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 4.6 seconds (4.4 seconds with M DCT) is 0.3 seconds slower, while its 155 mph (250 km/h) electronically-limited top speed is identical.

UK sales of the M4 Convertible are due to begin in September, with prices starting from £60,730. Specifying M DCT adds £2,645 to that amount.
