Although the new 4C Spider is currently being referred to as a ‘Design Preview’, Alfa Romeo has already confirmed that it’ll be entering production in early 2015.
The transition from hardtop to Spider has involved numerous bodywork changes. While the appearance of a lightweight canvas hood and carbon fibre windscreen frame are the most obvious, the open 4C has also received some structural reinforcement to maintain rigidity and crashworthiness. Nevertheless, Alfa Romeo reckons the exercise has added just 60 kg (132 lbs) to the car.
Interestingly the opportunity has also been taken to change the headlight design, which has been one of the 4C’s most criticised aspects. The wheels are different too, plus the familiar 1,750 cc four-cylinder turbocharged engine is equipped with a special centrally-mounted Akrapovic exhaust that boasts titanium and carbon fibre components.
Pricing has yet to be revealed, but a premium for the 4C Spider over the coupé wouldn’t be a surprise.
