Renault Kwid concept unveiled

Renault has gone for an off-road buggy look for its oddly-named Kwid concept, which has just been unveiled at the Delhi Auto Show.

Some of the car’s features are distinctly gimmicky - but then what’s the point of a concept if the designers can’t have some fun? Foremost among them is a Flying Companion, a small remote-controlled aerial vehicle that Renault reckons could be used for spotting traffic jams or taking photographs.

Also included are a bird’s nest-inspired interior, an unusual 3+2 seating layout with a central driving position, electrically-operated scissor doors and a tablet computer in place of normal instruments.

The Kwid probably wouldn’t manage very well on rough terrain though, because all-wheel drive isn’t part of the specification. Power comes from a 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol engine that’s connected to a dual-clutch transmission. Alternatively, space for batteries and a plug-in charging point concealed behind the diamond badge mean an all-electric version could be easily developed.

As a concept the compact Kwid is aimed at younger drivers in developing markets. Whether or not something like it will enter production remains to be seen.
