Don’t be deceived by the look of the new Citroën C5 CrossTourer. Despite SUV-inspired design details such as the brushed aluminium bash plates and black plastic cladding, it’s no off-roader.
That’s because unlike some rivals the Citroën isn’t available with all-wheel drive, not even as an option. Instead, a device called Intelligent Traction Control is being offered which is reckoned to make driving on snow- or mud-covered roads easier.
At least the CrossTourer does benefit from an increased ride height. Hydractive III+ suspension means the C5 can be raised by 6 cm (2.4”) up to 6 mph (10 km/h) and 4 cm (1.6”) up to 25 mph (40 km/h), plus the system keeps the car’s body level regardless of the load being carried. However, Hydractive III+ can’t be specified with two of the lower-powered diesel engines.
Undoubtedly the C5 CrossTourer could fulfil the practical estate role very well, but being front-wheel drive only limits its abilities. In France prices start from €31,950 and buyers have a choice of Millenium or Exclusive trim grades.
