The Bargains of Christmas - Asian Utility and Multi Purpose Vehicles (2013 Picks)

Our yearly feature during the season that everyone loves is on its second year. Finding a car for yourself (assuming if you are a good guy) or for your loved ones in each category is daunting, let The Ultimate Used Car Guide help you.

So, how are these bargain picks are chosen? Here are some criteria that were followed:
  • A vehicle must be available between 2003-2012
  • Reported problems from owners are minimal, based from local forums and several of my reviews
  • Vehicle value must be excellent, since they are good bargains.
  • Must offer a competitive advantage over its rivals and must fit the buyers needs in a category
  • Availability in the second hand market must be widespread
This Saturday, let us help you choose the AUV or MPV that fits your needs right before Christmas. These vehicles come in different sizes, can sit seven to ten people in a pinch, can withstand the Philippine setting, and less expenses on the financial aspect. Whether it is for the family or business, there's a vehicle for you.

ASIAN UTILITY AND MULTI PURPOSE VEHICLE BEST BARGAIN: 2005-2012 Toyota Innova
Eight years ago, nobody thought that this vehicle would sell well. But this vehicle is common with each intersection and mall parking lot having two Innovas or three. Underneath the minivan shell is a durable truck underpinnings, interior and seating arrangement that is similar to a car, high ground clearance, and the reliability a Toyota can offer. There is an Innova for everyone, but for the engine go with the diesels since they offer punch and efficiency.
    Recommended trims: 2.5 E/G

    Other bets:

    2003-2012 Isuzu Crosswind
We wouldn't bother with this vehicle when new, unless you'll be buying it to be used as a UV Express shuttle. But the appeal of the Crosswind lies on low maintenance costs and fuel economy, especially if you have a budget reserved for a brand new sub-compact. Just like the above mentioned competitors, a wide range of variants that tailors to your needs is a plus but this vehicle has high resale values. Go with the manuals since the matics have snail like acceleration.
    Recommended trim: 2.5 XUV

    2007-2012 Kia Carens
One of the two car based MPVs on the list, the Kia Carens is one appealing package at used car prices. The small body reveals the following: a flexible interior, a decent but spacious cabin, and a monstrous diesel engine. We wouldn't bother with the gasoline but pick the diesel and the six-speed manual and you're good to go. Do take note the Carens refered here is the first generation model.
    Recommended trim: Diesel

    2003-2012 Mitsubishi Adventure
With plenty of units and variants to choose from, the Adventure is one decent pick in the used car kingdom. It may not have some fancy features but you get a tough vehicle that can serve both your family and business requirements. Unlike the Isuzu which has ridiculous residuals, this one can be purchased for a low price. While there is a gasoline engine (discontinued in 2009), diesel models are cheaper to maintain and parts can be purchased anywhere.
    Recommended trim: 2.5 GLS Sport

    2008-2012 Nissan Grand Livina
What does the Carens and Grand Livina have in common? The availability of a six speed manual. Well, that's right. This is the transmission to choose when buying a second hand Grand Livina, since it is frugal and fun to drive with that. Other than the six-speed, virtues include a car like driving, a flexible cabin, and a fuel efficient engine.
    Recommended trim: 1.8 Elite

    2003-2005 Toyota Revo
Same with the Adventure, there is a Revo that suits each needs from the function to the financial aspect. Resilient as a bamboo, offers a spacious cabin, drives like a car, and a revelation, a soft clutch. Choose your engine wisely since the 1.8 can be slow with the AT but decent with a manual, 2.0 models are fast but fuel thirsty, and the diesel is the economical pick. When it comes to resale prices, gasoline models have low values (there is a reason for this) while the diesels are priced like gold.
    Recommended trims: 2.4 GLX/Sports Runner
