GMC has announced the arrival of its 2015 Sierra HD, which is essentially identical to the new Chevrolet Silverado HD.
That means the model year updates for the brand’s heavy duty pick-up focus on a revised cab design that’s available in regular, double or crew guises.
Cargo box lengths are either 1.98 m (6’ 6”) or 2.44 m (8’ 0”) and both have provision for users to insert a platform at wheel-housing height to enable two-tier loading. Maximum payload on 3500 versions is up to 3,344 kg (7,374 lbs), conventional towing capacity is now 8,890 kg (19,600 lbs) and the maximum fifth-wheel trailer weight has been increased to 10,523 kg (23,200 lbs).
Fitted as standard to the Sierra HD is the CornerStep rear bumper which, as its name implies, incorporates handy steps up to the load bed. Higher-specification variants also feature the ‘EZ Lift-and-Lower’ tailgate and LED cargo space lighting.
Power is provided by a 6.0 litre Vortec petrol V8 engine that comes connected to a Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic transmission. It develops 360 bhp (268 kW / 365 PS) in the 2500, or 322 bhp (240 kW / 326 PS) in the 3500. A petrol / compressed natural gas bi-fuel option is available too.
Alternatively, the 6.6 litre Duramax turbo diesel continues to be offered. Producing 397 bhp (296 kW / 402 PS) with a remarkable 1,037 Nm (765 lb/ft) of peak torque, it’s partnered with Allison’s 1000 six-speed automatic gearbox.
As well as the regular Sierra HD models, the more luxurious Denali trim grade also forms part of the range. Its extra equipment includes projector headlights that sit either side of a unique chrome grille, LED daytime running lights and body-coloured bumpers. On the inside, heated and cooled front seats, leather upholstery, a Bose audio system, satellite navigation and Bluetooth connectivity are all present.
The 2015 GMC Sierra HD is scheduled to arrive at dealers during the first quarter of 2014.
