Although there are still three months of 2013 left to run, Chevrolet has already unveiled its 2015 model year Silverado HD range.
Distinguishing the updated heavy duty pick-ups is a new cab design that’s claimed to be quieter thanks to better aerodynamics and improved door seals. The regular and crew cab styles continue to be offered, but the old extended cab has been replaced by a double cab option which features forward-hinged rear doors.
Powering the Silverado HD is a 6.0 litre Vortec petrol V8. It comes connected to a Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic transmission and develops either 360 bhp (268 kW / 365 PS) or 322 bhp (240 kW / 326 PS), depending on whether the 2500 or 3500 variants are chosen. This engine can also be specified as a bi-fuel version that runs on either petrol or compressed natural gas.
Alternatively, the 6.6 litre Duramax turbo diesel remains available. Producing 397 bhp (296 kW / 402 PS) with an impressive 1,037 Nm (765 lb/ft) of peak torque, it’s partnered with Allison’s 1000 six-speed automatic gearbox.
As well as the cosmetic changes, the revised Silverado HD also boasts increased capabilities compared to its predecessor. Maximum payload increases from 3,275 kg (7,222 lbs) to 3,344 kg (7,374 lbs), while conventional towing capacity grows by 725 kg (1,600 lbs) to 8,890 kg (19,600 lbs) and maximum fifth-wheel trailer weight rises to 10,523 kg (23,200 lbs).
Sales of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD are due to begin early next year.
