Following Nissan’s announcement last year that the Datsun brand would be resurrected, the marque’s first new model has now been unveiled.
Called the Datsun Go, it’s a small five-door hatchback that’ll be powered by a 1.2 litre petrol engine. Measuring 3,785 mm (12’ 5”) long and 1,635 mm (5’ 4”) wide, the Go is virtually the same size as a Nissan Micra.
Datsun’s plan is to target those markets that have a rapidly increasing demand for car ownership, so the chances of a European presence are slim.
The Go will initially be offered in India from early 2014. Built at a plant in Chennai, prices are expected to start at under Rs. 400,000. That’s around £4,400 or €5,100 based on current exchange rates.
Versions are then going to be developed for Russia, Indonesia and South Africa, with production likewise due to take place locally.
