BMW Concept Ninety unveiled

The BMW Concept Ninety is an unashamed homage to the 1973 R 90 S. Revealed at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este as part of BMW Motorrad’s 90th anniversary celebrations, it has been created in collaboration with Californian custom motorcycle firm Roland Sands Design.

Forty years ago, the R 90 S was notable for its aerodynamic styling, performance and vivid Daytona Orange paintjob. The Concept Ninety retains all of those traits, with eye-catching results.

Visually, the hand-crafted aluminium bodywork appears to float above the black-finished chassis and air-cooled, boxer-twin engine. The distinctive fairing mixes retro styling with a very modern LED headlight, while the stubby tail unit incorporates a single seat.

Among the bespoke parts provided by Roland Sands Design are the wheels, rear Paralever swingarm, exhaust system and engine valve covers.

The Concept Ninety isn’t the all-new production bike BMW will be building to commemorate its birthday. But maybe something similar should become a limited-run showroom model, as a contemporary reworking of the R 90 S would most likely attract a long queue of buyers.
