Fears that superstition would harm ‘13’ number plate registrations have proved to be unfounded.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, a total of 394,806 new cars were registered in March, a 5.9% increase on the same month last year.
That brought the total for the first quarter up to 605,198 - a year-on-year improvement of 41,642 which was marginally ahead of the SMMT’s forecast.
In a continuing trend, much of the additional volume came from the private segment, although the fleet and business sectors also showed signs of growth.
Compared to 2012’s top ten table, both the BMW 1 Series and 3 Series are notable absentees. They have been replaced by the Peugeot 208 and Nissan Juke, while the other eight models appearing on the list remain unchanged.
As expected, the Ford Fiesta remains the UK’s most popular car.
