Caterham has launched the new Seven Supersport R, which combines a 535 kg (1,179 lbs) kerb weight and a 180 bhp (134 kW / 182 PS) 2.0 litre Ford Duratec engine. Unsurprisingly, the result is very rapid acceleration, with the 0-60 mph (96 km/h) sprint taking just 4.8 seconds.
Derived from the race cars used in the Caterham Supersport Championship, the specification includes a limited slip differential, race springs, upgraded dampers, Avon CR500 tyres on 15” alloy wheels and a five-speed gearbox.
The cockpit too belies the car’s track focus, with composite seats, race harnesses, push-button start and a gear change-up light all coming as standard.
UK prices start at £24,995 (including tax) for the self-build version. Fully-built, the Supersport R costs £27,995.
Quite how many more Sevens will be produced with Ford power remains to be seen, though. With the announcement earlier this week of a joint venture between Caterham and Renault to build sports cars at the Alpine factory in Dieppe, it wouldn’t be unexpected if the French firm’s engines eventually found their way into the Seven.
