car news Honda NSC50R scooter

One of the new models being displayed by Honda at the Cologne Intermot Show is the NSC50R.

A twist-and-go scooter, it features sporty styling, 14” five-spoke cast aluminium wheels and a choice of Boss Grey Metallic, Pearl White or MotoGP-inspired Repsol colour schemes.

Power comes from a 49 cc, single-cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled, fuel-injected engine that develops 3.47 bhp (2.59 kW / 3.52 PS) and 3.5 Nm (2.5 lb/ft) of torque.

One of the NSC50R’s selling points will be its fuel economy, which is an impressive 140.7 mpg (2.0 l/100km / 49.8 km/l) according to the ECE R47 measure. With the 1.2 gallon (5.5 litre) petrol tank brimmed, that could theoretically mean a range of around 170 miles (273 kilometres) between refills.

The braking system comprises a 220 mm disc up front and a 130 mm drum for the rear. Unusually, these are linked using Honda’s Combined Braking System - the left-hand lever operates both the front and rear brakes, while the right-hand one controls the front only.

With a kerb weight of 105 kg (231 lbs) and a low seat height of 760 mm (29.9”), the NSC50R shouldn’t be too intimidating for novice riders, a group that will form a large part of the target market.

Honda has yet to announce prices.
