Peugeot 208 GTi revealed

Following the concept that was first seen at March’s Geneva Motor Show, Peugeot has revealed the production version of its 208 GTi.

Visually, not much has changed since Switzerland, and the GTi is identifiable by its unique gloss black and chrome grille, wheel arch extensions, deeper body sills and 17” ‘Carbon’ alloy wheels. In a shameless effort to recall the iconic 205 GTi, the rear quarter panels also feature chrome ‘GTi’ motifs.

Power comes from the same 1.6 litre THP petrol engine that’s used in the RCZ coupé. Developing 197 bhp (147 kW / 200 PS) with 275 Nm (206 lb/ft) of peak torque, Peugeot is saying that it’s powerful enough to accelerate the 208 from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in under seven seconds. Although there’s no word on fuel economy, carbon dioxide emissions will be a reasonable 145 g/km.

To cope with the extra performance, the springs and dampers have been recalibrated, plus the front sub-frame and rear crossmember are more rigid. The steering has also been tweaked to be more positive and provide added feedback, while ventilated disc brakes are fitted all-round.

Available as a three-door only, the Peugeot 208 GTI goes on sale early next year. Prices are going to be announced nearer to the launch date.
