BMW HP4 unveiled

BMW Motorrad has revealed its new HP4. Based on the existing S 1000 RR, it continues the marque’s line of specialised ‘High Performance’ motorcycles and is aimed squarely at those who prefer to do their riding on a track.

Anyone expecting a higher output from the four-cylinder, 999 cc engine will be disappointed though, as it still produces 190 bhp (142 kW / 193 PS). However, full power is now available across all throttle maps and several clever features should mean that the HP4 makes the most of its motor.

Among these is Dynamic Damping Control, an innovative system that continuously adjusts the suspension according to road surface and riding situation to ensure maximum traction.

Also included in the specification is a Launch Control device, which is going to make standing starts on the HP4 a relatively effortless affair. A first for BMW, it adjusts engine torque under hard acceleration to prevent front-wheel lift, and it partners the ‘shift assistant’ function that prevents power delivery losses during gear changes.

Braking improvements centre on new Brembo monoblock calipers that work together with floating discs to slow the front wheel. The anti-lock set-up has been tweaked too, with experience gained in the IDM race championship resulting in the ‘Slick’ mode being retuned specifically for circuit use.

One thing that should certainly be in the HP4’s favour is its weight which, at 199 kg (438 lbs) with a 90% full fuel tank and Race ABS, is reckoned to be the lightest in class. The major elements of the bike’s diet have been redesigned seven-spoke alloy wheels, a titanium exhaust and a lighter battery.

Telling the HP4 apart from a regular S 1000 RR should be fairly easy thanks to the Racing Blue / Light White colour scheme, single seat, tinted windshield, tiny LED indicators and elongated engine spoiler. For an even more select look, the Competition Package adds blue-painted wheels, sponsor stickers, a carbon fibre lower fairing, HP footrests and folding HP brake and clutch levers.

Highlighting the exclusivity of the HP4, each machine will come with its serial number engraved on the fork bridge. Prices and market launch dates have yet to be announced.
