2013 F-150 SVT Raptor

Ford has given its F-150 SVT Raptor performance pick-up a mild update for the 2013 model year.

As with other variants in the F-150 range, high-intensity discharge headlights, the Sync voice-controlled entertainment and communications system and a 4.2” LCD productivity screen in the instrument cluster now come as standard. For those wanting even more in-cab technology, voice-controlled satellite navigation, a rear-view camera and a front grille-mounted camera all appear on the options list.

Perhaps the most significant development is the availability of conventional aluminium wheels that switch to beadlocks using an aftermarket kit from Ford Racing. The beadlocks are designed to grip the edges of the tyres to the wheels between two surfaces, meaning that there’s minimal risk of a tyre rolling off the rim when it has been deflated down to a low pressure - a technique that’s very useful in some off-road conditions to gain extra traction.

Converting the wheels involves unbolting the standard outer rings, repositioning the tyre edges in the lock-enabled position and then securing them with the beadlock rings. Because it’s such an original solution, Ford is in the process of getting a patent granted.

There’s no change to the Raptor’s engine for 2013, which means that it continues to be powered by a 6.2 litre V8 producing 411 bhp (306 kW / 416 PS) with 434 lb/ft (588 Nm) of peak torque. As before, drive is via a six-speed automatic transmission.

Pricing for the 2013 F-150 SVT Raptor has yet to be announced.
