Chevrolet Avalanche axed

After two generations and eleven years of sales, Chevrolet has decided to call time on its Avalanche pick-up.

Based on the same full-size underpinnings as the Suburban and Silverado, the four-door, five-seat Avalanche’s unique feature was its ‘midgate’ that extended the cargo area into the cab.

With over 580,000 examples produced, it was undoubtedly a popular concept. However, annual sales have dropped off to around 20,000 units in recent years because, Chevrolet says, buyers are going for more traditional crew cab pick-ups instead. The growing downsizing trend is probably a factor too, but whatever the reasons 2013 will be the final model year for the Avalanche.

To mark the end - and to help shift the remaining stock - a special Black Diamond version has been created that comes with unique badges and body-coloured load bed surrounds. Furthermore, the LS models now include fog lights, power-adjustable pedals, rear park assist and remote start as standard, while both the LS and LT trim grades get a rear-view camera.

Perhaps just as importantly, prices have been reduced by $2,500, meaning that the entry-level 2013 Avalanche costs $35,980 (plus a $995 freight charge) in the United States.
